01 — ITASHA, IN ONE SENTENCE
Itasha is a car customized with artwork inspired by anime, manga, video games, or characters.
But calling it simply an “anime-wrapped car” doesn’t really tell the whole story.
Because Itasha isn’t just about the wrap.
It’s about what you choose to put on your car — and why.
02 — WHY IS IT CALLED “ITASHA”?
The Japanese word 痛車 (Itasha) literally combines:
痛い — Itai
Painful / embarrassing
車 — Sha
Car
So, roughly speaking:
“The painful car.”
Sounds strange?
That’s exactly the joke.
The name refers to how incredibly bold — and sometimes unapologetically otaku — these cars can look.
And for Itasha owners, that’s part of the fun.
If everyone notices your car, you’re probably doing it right.
03 — ITASHA = MORE THAN ANIME
There isn’t a strict rulebook.
Your design might feature:

Characters & iconic scenes
MANGA
Illustrations & visual storytelling
GAMES
Your favorite game or character
ORIGINAL ART
Your own concept and identity
The important part isn’t the category.

Not every Itasha needs to be extreme.

Larger artwork combined with the original color of the car.

Full Itasha Wrap
The entire vehicle becomes part of the design.

There is no “correct” level.
Start with what feels like you.
06 — WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT?
Ask different Itasha owners and you’ll get different answers.
Some want to celebrate a favorite character.

Itasha began in Japan, but the culture didn’t stay there.
